Can you write a sentence??

Think you can? Let’s find out!

Teachers: free to run with your whole class. No student accounts, nothing installed, nothing collected beyond a first name and the score. Students see their own results at the end.

Warm up

Give it your best shot.

Write two or three sentences about . Do not overthink it and do not fix anything. You will see this again at the end.

Round 1 of 5

One of these is a complete sentence.

Tap the one that is complete.

The secret

Writers test a sentence instead of guessing.

Read Because the pizza disappeared... out loud and stop. Feel that? Your brain is left waiting. Because the pizza disappeared, what happened? Both lines have a who and a doing word. Only one can stand alone. Here is the whole test:

Prove it
1Paint the WHO or WHAT green.
Repair shop

Say your repair out loud first; your voice knows where the thought ends. Then use one of three moves: ADD what is missing, ATTACH it to a finishing thought, or CHANGE it so it stands alone. Rewrite it as a real sentence.

The four checks · every sentence, every time
1WHO or WHAT is it about?
2DOES or IS what?
3Can it STAND ALONE?
4CAPITAL + STOP.
Level up

Three broken pieces build one sentence.

None of these pieces can stand alone. They are all incomplete. Say it out loud first, then combine them into ONE complete sentence. This is exactly what strong answers do on STAAR short responses.

The four checks · every sentence, every time
1WHO or WHAT is it about?
2DOES or IS what?
3Can it STAND ALONE?
4CAPITAL + STOP.
The boss level

Write a complete sentence that begins with “Because.”

Anyone can write “I like pizza.” This is the real test of whether you escaped the trap. Make it about if you want.

Here is the secret weapon: you will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS need a comma. The comma keeps the unfinished part away from the complete thought: Because something happened, someone did something.

The four checks · every sentence, every time
1WHO or WHAT is it about?
2DOES or IS what?
3Can it STAND ALONE?
4CAPITAL + STOP.
The final challenge

The four checks · every sentence, every time

3Can it STAND ALONE?
