Terms of Service

Last updated June 2026

Welcome to WRITE it!™ (The Essay That Talks Back™), a product of In Between the Lattes, LLC. These Terms of Service govern your use of the WRITE it! service, website, and related products. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms.

Who can use the service

WRITE it! is licensed to educators, schools, and educational institutions for classroom and instructional use. Accounts are created by teachers, school administrators, and authorized district staff. Students do not create accounts — they access individual assignments through a code provided by their teacher.

Acceptable use

You agree to use the service lawfully and in line with its educational purpose. You may not resell, sublicense, reverse-engineer, scrape, or redistribute any part of the service or its content without prior written permission from In Between the Lattes, LLC.

Accounts and security

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for any activity under your account. You must provide accurate information when registering and notify us promptly of any unauthorized access.

Subscriptions and billing

Paid plans are billed as described at sign-up. Individual teacher plans may be billed monthly or annually; campus and district plans are billed annually. Fees are non-refundable except where required by law. We may adjust pricing for new billing periods with reasonable notice.

Availability and changes

WRITE it! is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We work to keep the service reliable and accurate but do not guarantee uninterrupted access or that the service will be error-free. We may update, modify, or discontinue features over time as the product evolves.

Termination

You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account or by contacting us. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or are used in ways that harm the service or other users.

Privacy Policy

Last updated June 2026

We take student privacy seriously. WRITE it! was designed from day one to collect as little personal information as possible — especially from students — while still giving teachers the coaching data they need.

The short version

WRITE it! does not collect or store class rosters, student names, student emails, or any other directly identifying student information. Students access assignments through anonymous codes and self-chosen passphrases. We do not integrate with Google Classroom, Clever, ClassLink, or any other roster-sync platform at launch.

Information we collect from teachers

  • Account information: name, email address, school or district name, and login credentials.
  • Assignment data: assignments you create — the passage, prompt, acronym, and settings you choose.
  • Usage data: basic analytics about how you use the service (pages visited, features used) to help us improve the product.
  • Billing information: processed by our payment provider; we do not store payment card numbers on our servers.

Information collected when students use an assignment

When students open an assignment, the tool collects only what is needed to coach the work and let students resume it across sessions:

  • Assignment code (a short, non-identifying code generated by the teacher).
  • Passphrase hash — the four-word passphrase chosen by the student is one-way hashed before storage; we never store the passphrase itself in plaintext.
  • Student work-in-progress — the annotations, draft, brainstorm, and coaching responses created during the assignment. This is keyed only to the assignment code and the passphrase hash, not to any identifying student information.

Teachers see student progress in the dashboard identified by anonymous animal-name slots (e.g., “Otter,” “Hedgehog”), not by name. Students type a name only at the moment of submitting a final essay, and that name appears only on the submitted artifact. We do not store rosters linking student names to assignments over time.

How long we keep things

  • Teacher accounts: kept while your account is active. You can request deletion at any time.
  • Assignment work-in-progress: automatically deleted thirty (30) days after the student submits, or after the assignment is closed by the teacher.
  • Submitted essays: available to the teacher to download or print; retained for the duration of the school year unless the teacher requests earlier deletion.
  • Analytics: aggregated, non-identifying usage data may be retained longer for product improvement.

How we use information

We use the information we collect only to operate WRITE it!, provide teacher dashboards, support customers, prevent abuse, and improve the product. We do not sell personal information. We do not use student work for advertising. We do not use student work to train or improve any external artificial intelligence or machine-learning models.

Who can see student work

Student work created in an assignment is visible to the teacher who created the assignment and to authorized staff at the school or district that owns the account. We do not share student work with third parties except where required by law.

Service providers

We use a small set of third-party service providers to deliver WRITE it! — primarily for hosting, database storage, authentication, and email. Each is contractually bound to handle data only as needed to operate the service.

Your choices

Teachers may update or delete their account information at any time through their account settings or by emailing us. Schools and districts may request a Data Privacy Agreement, request a copy of data we hold, or request deletion of all data tied to their account.

Cookie Policy

Last updated June 2026

WRITE it! uses a small number of cookies and similar browser-storage technologies to keep the service working.

What we use them for

  • Essential cookies: keep teachers logged in and remember settings within the app.
  • Session storage: students’ work-in-progress is held in browser storage tied to the assignment code and passphrase hash, so they can resume across days without an account.
  • Analytics cookies: we may use limited, privacy-respecting analytics to understand how the product is used in aggregate. These do not identify individual users.

Your choices

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies will affect core functionality such as login and resuming a student session.

FERPA Compliance

Last updated June 2026

WRITE it! is designed to support schools and districts in meeting their obligations under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Our minimal-data design

Because WRITE it! does not collect class rosters, student names, or student email addresses, and because student work is tied to a non-identifying assignment code and a hashed passphrase rather than to identified students, the volume of student education records we handle is intentionally small.

Our role under FERPA

To the extent any information we process constitutes a student education record under FERPA, we handle it only as a “school official” with a legitimate educational interest, under the direction of the school or district. We do not use student records for any purpose other than providing the service to the school.

Data Privacy Agreements

We will sign a Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) on request for campus and district customers. Texas districts can request our standard Texas Student Data Privacy Agreement template at privacy@inbetweenthelattes.com.

Parent and student rights

Requests from parents or eligible students for access to, correction of, or deletion of any records WRITE it! holds should be directed to the student’s school or district, which acts as the controller of those records. We will support schools in responding to such requests.
